Commission names access road by Station 4 for firefighter Steve Skipton

Chief Mike Nixon addressed the commission and recounted Skipton's career and service. Nixon said, "Steve dedicated 25 years of his life to the fire service and emergency services as a whole." Nixon also noted Skipton's service as an EMT and his response to the World Trade Center attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, as part of his broader record of service. Staff clarified that Berkeley County requested a small technical modification to the proposed street name so it would comply with county naming procedures; the commission then moved and approved the naming.
Commissioners spoke in favor of the proposal before voting to approve the name; the measure carried. Chief Nixon said placing the name near the station will provide a daily reminder of Skipton's service to firefighters and the community.
