Debate grows over donor‑funded pavilion for Veterans Park

Friends of Beach Haven presented plans for a donor-funded, open-air 30-by-60-foot pavilion in Veterans Park designed to reflect the borough’s historic district. A Friends representative, who also identified as a council member and co‑chair of the historic preservation commission, said the pavilion would provide shade, improve accessibility, and support concerts, ceremonies and farmers‑market activities without using taxpayer funds.
"Shade structures and gathering spaces make parks usable and welcoming for everyone," the presenter said, adding that the pavilion would occupy about 2% of the park and that the existing gazebo would remain.
Opponents at the meeting and on Zoom argued the park’s value lies in its broad, uninterrupted open vista and urged preservation. Susan Rangrati, a Zoom commenter, said the park "doesn't need to be changed" and urged the council to reject the proposal to preserve the park's open, historic character.
Council members responded that agendas and Zoom access have been publicly available and that the Friends of Beach Haven and Community Arts Program (CAP) should meet to revisit the pavilion’s location. One council member said the pavilion is "most likely going to get built" but encouraged continued public input; no formal approval or zoning change occurred at the meeting.
