Garland City Council member Joe Thomas spoke to the Garland Youth Council about his background, priorities and recent city projects, and answered members’ questions. "So I got elected last year on May 3," Thomas said as he described moving from Oklahoma to Garland and his work on the charter review and bond study committees before running for council.
Thomas highlighted work funded by the 2019 bond — including a new animal shelter, recreation centers, fire stations and libraries — and said the bond also targets streets and alleys. He recounted neighborhood opposition to a developer proposal to convert the Oak Ridge golf course into rental housing and said the neighborhood was exploring buying the property to preserve it as open space. "400 people showed up to oppose that development," Thomas said, describing the community response at a library meeting.
Thomas also flagged upcoming retail and sports projects he expects to affect the district, including plans reported by Thomas for a full‑size H‑E‑B at the Firewheel area and a proposal for eight new soccer fields near Holford and George Bush. He encouraged civic involvement and asked youth council members to consider public service in the future. "We're a home rule city," he said, explaining how ordinary residents can run for council.
