Residents and committee members raised practical accessibility ideas for city-sponsored events, including on-site captioning for stage presentations and clearer concession ordering for deaf or nonverbal attendees.
A resident suggested numbering concession menu items so customers who cannot speak or who have difficulty communicating can point to a number. "Maybe you could have them numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 so it's a little easier for people, especially deaf people when they're ordering," the resident said; staff replied they already use laminated menus and agreed numbering could be implemented.
On captioning, a committee member asked whether the city could provide a large screen or TV with captions for presentations during multi-hour events such as the upcoming Asian celebration; staff said the special-events coordinator (Dana Lodge) manages stage production and that the city would check whether captioning via a large screen or laptop is feasible.
Committee members noted captions allow attendees to move around and return to presentations without losing access, whereas a continuous interpreter would need to be present at all times; staff agreed to check logistics with the special-events team and report back.
