Sam, the IT presenter, told the court the data center in Waco currently has two SonicWall devices: one primary that handles traffic and a high-availability unit that sits idle until the primary fails.
Sam explained, "If the primary 1 fails, the high availability takes over so that it does not cause an outage," describing the rationale for maintaining a standby and replacing devices marked end-of-life. He said the county's current model is end-of-life and manufacturer support is scheduled to stop Aug. 1, which is why staff brought forward a list of proposed projects.
Staff recommended replacing the end-of-life device with the newer model and said doing so aligns with current data-center configuration; they also discussed prepaying multi-year service to reduce per-year costs and identified opportunities to phase out certain local SonicWall devices and incorporate networks to save long-term monthly charges.
