Hydrology study finds County Road 274 options costly; engineers to return Feb. 24

Project representatives gave estimated costs for more extensive solutions: roughly $7,500,000 to improve performance toward a 5‑year event and about $10,500,000 to reach a 10‑year standard. Staff said those costs are outside the present grant allocation and recommended considering dropping County Road 274 from the grant package to allow three other projects (Shady Lane, Bald Knob and Avenue B) to proceed within the allocated budget. Staff told commissioners the grantor (GLO) caps engineering fees at 15% and that engineers will return to explain options and tradeoffs at the Feb. 24 commission meeting.
Commissioners discussed FEMA participation, in‑house repair limits and liability concerns (including whether a route serves school buses). No final change to the grant package was made at the meeting; staff said the court must be prepared to make a decision on Feb. 24.
