City to add cameras, gates and perimeter barriers at Rick Oden Park to curb nuisance activity

Carrie Pacheco, Garland's parks director, briefed the board on recent security measures at Rick Oden Park in response to nuisance activity. "We're going to get a couple more cameras up at the park...we noticed there were some dead areas that we weren't able to see behind the restroom area, and so we're gonna be adding some additional cameras so we can get more views of that," Pacheco said.
Pacheco said staff and council had discussed night closures and physical barriers to limit vehicle intrusions and loud driving. Gates are being delivered and marshals will lock park gates at 10 p.m.; parks staff will open gates at 6 a.m. She said enforcement will be balanced with emergency access: "We'll have Knox Box on those gates...so if something did happen and fire needs or anybody needs to respond, they have the ability to unlock those gates." The board discussed the limits of a fully airtight solution and the cost tradeoffs for different barrier materials.
