Jericho volunteers maintain tree nursery; Liberty Elm planted for 250th

Commissioners reported volunteer and staff efforts to water trees at the Town Tree Nursery, planted a Liberty Elm at Pleasant View Cemetery on July 3 for the town 250th anniversary, and noted the town's three-year maintenance responsibility under the grant MOU.
Sabina Ernst, a member of the Jericho Conservation Commission, reported that Don Tobi recently watered trees at the Town Tree Nursery and that "the Liberty Elm was added to trees at the Pleasant View Cemetery as part of the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence." The Liberty Elm was planted on July 3; Don will add a water bag so Jessica Alexander can add water.
Sabina said she has not yet secured volunteers to water the grant trees and has been assisting along with BRMS maintenance person Rich; Tom Baribault and Wayne Ellis offered to help with watering duties. The grant MOU with the school district requires the town to care for planted trees for three years, and commissioners noted one sycamore near the preschool play area that is unhealthy will be replaced by the nursery. Sabina said some grant funds were underspent and those monies may be used to buy more trees.
Commissioners discussed sourcing disease-resistant varieties such as Chestnut for the Tree Nursery and agreed to look for trees at sales next winter or spring. Don will inspect the unhealthy sycamore and discuss replacement with Creative Nursery.
