Board designates court counsel to represent public interest in juvenile cases under Wis. Stat. ch. 48
Summary
Finding the county had not formally designated court counsel under Wisconsin statute, supervisors passed a bridge resolution to notify the state and have court counsel act through Jan. 1, 2026; staff said the change should save a small amount versus leaving duties with the district attorney.

Staff explained that chapter 48 of the Wisconsin Statutes designates the district attorney to represent the public interest in certain juvenile-protection and guardianship cases unless the county formally designates court counsel. The county discovered no formal designation was on file and presented a resolution to correct that and notify the state; staff said court counsel has been performing the work and the resolution would put the designation into effect through Jan. 1, 2026.
A staff member told the board the change would be a small cost savings relative to current arrangements and would avoid cases inadvertently falling to the understaffed district attorney's office. Supervisors voted to approve the resolution to formally designate court counsel (resolution 202534) and directed staff to notify the state as required by statute.
