Vernon County board approves $47,197.50 to sustain rural violent-crime reduction initiative after DOJ grant canceled

Amy Oliver, Vernon County's community development director, told the board the Department of Justice canceled the Rural Violent Crime Reduction Initiative grant and that the county had relied on the award to sustain a local domestic-violence prevention and reduction program. "On May 2, WISC reached out and said the Department of Justice canceled this grant program, and no activities will be reimbursed after April 22," Oliver said, and presented a resolution requesting $47,197.50 to carry the program through the end of the year.
Susan Townsley of Stone House Counseling described program results and the risk of disruption without county support: "We have had 107 referrals, since the start of the program, conducted 46 assessments, had 25 group members, 14 have graduated, and we currently... have 16 people waiting for assessments who have been told that this would be a service that they would get at no cost." Supervisors asked about sustainability and alternative funding; staff cited ongoing grant applications (including a private foundation process with results expected in July) and possible local investments. The board voted to approve the requested county allocation (resolution 202537) to sustain services through the year and allow time to secure additional funding.
