Arcadia Unified to keep elementary Chromebooks in class; district will provide home devices on request

Arcadia Unified's Technology and Innovation team told the board it is shifting the elementary Chromebook program back to the original pre-pandemic model: devices will remain in classrooms rather than routinely going home with students. "So that's what we're in the process of doing right now is shifting to the original format of our Chromebook program where those Chromebooks stay in the classroom for teachers to use as part of their lessons," said Mr. Gazzengi from Technology.
Board members asked how families without a home device will be supported. Technology staff said devices will still be made available to families who need them and that staff will work with principals and teachers to provide devices for long-term projects or special needs. The department plans to collect Chromebooks over the next week, prepare them for classroom use, monitor any marginal increase in power usage from charging devices in schools, and to purchase supplemental storage carts where needed. The IT team also said it will replace a 13-year-old help-desk ticket system over the coming year to improve support.
