County recycling update highlights 2,354-tire event, school composting and regional HHW coordination

Karla Smith-Kasten updated the committee on regional hazardous-waste coordination, outreach projects and events. She said the HHW meeting of Manistee, Mason and Oceana counties is scheduled for April 7, 2026, and that the Tire Event collected 2,354 tires in 2026, a result the coordinator thanked the Manistee County Conservation District for supporting.
Smith-Kasten described ongoing education and pilot projects, including a Kaleva-Norman-Dickson school garden program to compost cafeteria food scraps, and a planned plastics project with the Armory/Seeds program next summer. She noted plans to attend the MRC conference May 11–13 in Kalamazoo and encouraged committee members to check EGLE webinars for additional educational resources.
