Public comments, council reports and proclamation highlight community activity
Summary
During the Feb. 12 meeting the council heard brief public comments on water and Veterans Park memorial trees, received councilmember reports on local events and services, and the mayor issued a proclamation declaring February as Career and Technical Education Month.
Two members of the public addressed the council during the Call to the Public. Andre Newcomb spoke about water and the Colorado River. Andrew Murray asked when memorial trees in Veterans Park will receive plaques and when residents will be notified of their tree locations.
Councilmembers provided brief reports and community announcements: Councilmember Cynthia Butterworth noted an upcoming food distribution and an MPO meeting; Councilmember Danielle Cardella promoted a school movie night and free tax preparation at the library; Councilmember Debra Trate reported attending an event with Governor Hobbs and a USPP meeting that lacked quorum; Mayor Pro Tem Christy Hirshberg referenced a social-media post by Sierra Vista’s mayor; Councilmember Nallely Arreola promoted bingo at the high school. Mayor Johann R. Wallace described Lion’s Club events, judged a science fair, and said he will sign a letter supporting a House bill to exempt fire apparatus from property taxes.
Mayor Wallace also presented Proclamation 2026‑01 declaring February as Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month to raise awareness of CTE programs in the town. The meeting adjourned after the reports and motions were completed.
