Jefferson County Public Health Director Katie Russell asked the board to approve an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) with Jefferson County School District 509J to host open‑gym basketball nights for youth and to direct grant funding to the district for facility upgrades.
"Last year, we had a really successful open gym basketball at night, and we'd like to continue that," Russell said, explaining that the IGA also enables the county to send a $45,000 grant payment for floor and building upgrades. The program is intended to support a substance‑misuse prevention effort by offering safe, supervised activities for teens in the evenings.
Commissioners approved the IGA by motion and expressed support that the program is grant‑funded rather than being charged to county general fund. Staff said the program is scheduled to begin on the 19th of the month for Friday nights and that the agreement will be signed and executed to allow the payments and programming to proceed.
