On the second reading of an ordinance about accessory dwelling units (ADUs), county staff confirmed there were no changes to the ordinance text and the board voted to adopt the amendments to Jefferson County zoning sections 304, 306 and 434.
"This is the 2nd reading of the ordinance adopting the previously discussed land use decision amending the Jefferson County zoning ordinance related to accessory dwelling units," the presiding official read from the prepared script. Commissioner Similink moved to adopt the ordinance and the motion was seconded; the board recorded unanimous aye votes and the motion carried.
Planning staff told the board the ordinance text remains unchanged from the first reading and explained an anticipated 90‑day incubation; staff said that, barring appeals, applicants could begin filing for eligible ADUs on Dec. 4. Staff also noted section 4.34 contains provisions for using historic documentation to allow certain structures to be brought up to minimum code rather than requiring new professional attestations — a tool intended to streamline compliance and reduce cost burdens for some property owners.
Commissioners emphasized that the change is intended to expand housing options and protect property‑owner rights, and directed staff to prepare a brochure and press materials summarizing application steps and limits.
