Kearney honors volunteer firefighters and spotlights expanded in-house training

Aaron Jamieson, fire chief of the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department, presented annual service awards at the City Council meeting, naming members who reached service milestones from 10 to 35 years. Jamieson described the department's recent training expansion that consolidated instruction in-house and now includes Firefighter I (86 hours), HAZMAT operations (32 hours) and Firefighter II (about 75 hours), "bringing the total training requirements in nearly 200 hours."
Jamieson listed recipients and years of service, including Matthew Bignoch (10 years), Dave Krueger (15 years), Lonnie Reeder (15 years), Jason Whelan (25 years) and Jerry Thompson (35 years). He told the council the training changes reflect "the dedication of our training staff" and said the new skills will be "invaluable as they continue to serve the Kearney community with excellence." Mayor Nicola thanked the department for their time and service and noted the community's appreciation for volunteer first responders.
