Salem Township supervisors adopt ordinance adding roads to weight-restricted list

The Salem Township Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted Ordinance No. 2-2026 on Feb. 24, 2026, to amend the township's Restricted Roadways Ordinance (No. 1-2024 Exhibit A) and add additional roadways to the list of weight-restricted highways, roadways, or bridges. The motion to enact the ordinance was made by Supervisor Todd Paulich, seconded by Supervisor Bob Zundel, and passed 3-0.

Residents had urged the board to act after heavy hauling on Quarry Drive and other local streets, and board members said the ordinance change was needed to align posted limits with the official restricted-roadways list. Supervisor Kerry Jobe said the ordinance would not affect local deliveries: "it will not be a problem because it is considered local delivery." The minutes record that farmers are exempt from the restrictions and that pre-existing businesses would be treated differently than new commercial hauling.

The board's action followed a staff and member inspection of Quarry Drive, which is posted with a 10-ton weight limit but was not listed in the township's restricted-roadways exhibit. Supervisor Todd Paulich told resident Chad Shifko that he had asked him to stop work at the site because, per the minutes, the road "is posted with a 10-ton weight limit and it should have been bonded." The ordinance adoption formally adds roadways to the restricted list so the township's official records match posted limits and provide a clearer basis for enforcement.

The vote to adopt Ordinance No. 2-2026 was recorded as: Kerry Jobe, yes; Bob Zundel, yes; Todd Paulich, yes. The adoption takes effect according to the ordinance language; the minutes do not specify an effective date or a detailed enforcement plan. The board scheduled further review of additional roads in future meetings.
