Board reviews next wave of downtown projects including fire-suppression design and Highway 5 plan

Barry Shelton (City Manager’s Office) reviewed projects the board already approved or has on the near-term radar. He said the board authorized $460,000 for the downtown fire-suppression design phase in December and that design work is set to begin March 23 with lidar scanning and public meetings planned. Shelton warned that construction costs are not yet finalized but flagged possible placeholders when designs complete.
Shelton also described the State Highway 5 small-area plan, which the board allocated $300,000 to support streetscape planning along that corridor, and listed other priorities such as pedestrian crossings, open-space improvements and potential land-banking to help facilitate redevelopment. Shelton emphasized that large projects such as the venue/amphitheater and parking garage will affect fund balances and should be considered in the context of previously encumbered obligations.
