Historic marker approved for Davis Lucas House on South Bradley Street

The McKinney Historic Preservation Advisory Board voted to approve a historic marker application for the Davis Lucas House at 2210 South Bradley Street.

Staff member Reyna presented the application, describing the house as a Gothic Revival/folk Victorian constructed about 1888. Reyna said the house "was originally constructed by the William Davis family, who were the ones who donated a 120 acres for the official establishment of McKinney in 18 48, 49," and noted subsequent ownership by the Gabriel Lucas family and long use of the front of the house as Lucas Studio's photography studio.

Homeowners, who were present for the item, spoke in support. One owner said, "I just love living in this home. I love McKinney. My heart is here," and described family connections to the property's photographic‑studio history and an intact front elevation.

Board member Marcia moved to approve the marker application; the motion was seconded and the Chair called the vote. The board approved the marker and the Chair recorded that the motion "carries unanimously, with the exception of James who recused himself from the voting process." The Chair then acknowledged James could return to the meeting.

The board packet included historic photos from 1948 and later elevations; staff recommended approval based on the structure's architectural characteristics and its local historical associations through the Davis and Lucas families. No additional conditions or delays were imposed.

The approval will allow placement of a city historic marker recognizing the property's local contributions to McKinney history. The homeowners said they hoped the marker would honor the Lucas family's role as photographers and the earlier Davis land donation.
