Undertold McKinney project secures historic marker for Doty School

Tori Brown, who works in the City of McKinney's historic preservation office, announced that the Undertold McKinney advisory group had secured a historic marker honoring Doty School. "It is my great honor to announce that we have been awarded a historic marker for Dodie School," Brown said during opening remarks.
Brown said the marker application grew from a 2023 city historic-resource survey that reviewed 6,258 properties and identified significant gaps in documentation for McKinney's Black and Hispanic neighborhoods. Undertold McKinney launched in June 2025 with a community advisory group that includes local organizations and residents; the advisory selected Doty School as its first marker project. Brown emphasized the community role in the application and thanked neighborhood groups and residents who supplied letters of support.
The marker will take time to produce and install, Brown said; she asked the audience to view the award as the start of a wider preservation effort rather than a conclusion. The panel that followed featured former Doty students and local residents who described the school's educational role, the trauma of repeated arson in earlier years, and the long legacy of community-led education in East McKinney.
