Fossil and Prairie Center staff report programs, interns and maple-syrup season

Director Tyron Steere and center staff briefed the board on programming and operational work ahead of the busy season. Naturalist Heidi Reams has been active in area schools and led public programs including Creative Eggs and Learn to Turkey Hunt. Office Manager Jessica O’Connor has been organizing budget line items and working on the Ioponics plant system and exhibit updates.
Tyron reported two summer interns—Carter Burkhardt and Clay Price—have been hired and will start in May. Staff taught hunter education to 25 students with an additional 10 attending the field day. The center purchased a John Deere 1025R tractor/mower (deck arriving late April). Maple syrup season tapped about 170 trees and produced approximately 120.5 gallons of syrup from about 4,790 gallons of sap, packaged into 183 half-pints, 218 pints, 247 quarts and 20 one-gallon containers. The center will open Saturdays starting May 1 and daily beginning Memorial Day; a budget amendment is planned in May to align intern funds and exhibit touchscreen costs.
