Treasurer Shelly Weich updated the Berrien County Finance Committee on the county's investment position and foreclosure activity on March 26, 2026. She said the county's move to Meeder for investments was "the correct one" and that pooled funds totaled "over $58 million" at year end; she also said she will work with Meeder on a cash analysis to consider further investing.
Weich described outreach she completed to local municipalities over a three-month period and said she expects to visit Niles City and Niles Township about once a month based on reception in the south county. On foreclosures, she reported the list has been reduced from 1,949 parcels to 438 and that additional properties may be redeemed or enter payment plans before the foreclosure process next Tuesday. She also noted two court cases could result in county payouts tied to foreclosed parcels later sold at auction.
The Treasurer said the annual borrowing resolution to make other tax entities whole will be presented soon and that two municipalities remain outstanding in the tax settlement process. No public comment was recorded on the updates.
