County renews contract allowing schools to use ExpressVote accessibility machine

Election Administrator Toni Hofland told the commission the ExpressVote contract — used in prior school elections since 2021 — lets school districts use one of the county’s accessible voting machines for in-person, private voting by voters with disabilities.
"This enables them to have disabled voters be able to vote in privacy and secret, because these machines are equipped with audio, Sip-N-Puff, magnification ability to switch between different screens to make it easier for the visually impaired," Hofland said, describing the device’s accessibility features. Commissioner Ed Beaudette asked whether school elections are mail-in; Hofland explained that school elections remain mail-in but state law still requires an accessible in-person option.
Hofland said the contract language is unchanged from prior school-election agreements. The chair opened the floor for public comment; none was offered. The commission placed the item on the agenda for formal consideration at the special meeting following the work session.
