Mayor Nicola opened the meeting by introducing Chief Kowalik and Officer Zach Schwartz for a brief ceremony to swear in the Kearney Police Department’s newest police service dog, Kuba.
Chief Kowalik described Kuba as “a Dutch shepherd that was born in Czechoslovakia” who trained in Arkansas and completed Nebraska State Patrol certification in narcotics detection and suspect apprehension. “He tested very high” in areas such as courage and drive, Kowalik said, and officers have since had call‑outs where “Bubba has located methamphetamine, other drugs in our community,” which Kowalik said helps “keep our community safe.”
Officer Zach Schwartz then took the oath of office. The council observed the ceremony and congratulated the handler and K‑9 team.
