Staff told the commission the City of Astoria has partnered with the Lower Columbia Preservation Society (LCPS) to offer free historic plaques to property owners during Historic Preservation Month in May and will publicize the program through social media and local radio.
City planner Tiffany Taylor said LCPS is paying for replacement plaques and staff may organize volunteer teams to install plaques to avoid homeowners keeping them in the house. "So primarily through social media, and then, LCPS has really good communication with locals to help... we are gonna do, as over radio and social media that we can to get the word out," Taylor said.
Taylor also summarized outreach tied to the preservation plan: a community heritage resilience survey is open April 11–May 11 (linked via social media and QR codes), a May 9 lunchtime workshop at Fort George will gather in‑person input, and the Oregon Heritage Summit (April 17–18) is available to commissioners with city payment of registration.
Staff confirmed the next HLC meeting is scheduled for May 20 at 5:30 p.m., with three applications already on the agenda, and reminded commissioners that the Doctor Harvey Awards will be presented at the May 5 City Council meeting.
