The Astoria Budget Subcommittee appointed David Ozer as chair and moved through a slate of grant recommendations after a staff overview showing 17 applications seeking $160,225 against roughly $100,000 available.
"There were 17 organizations that requested grants for a total total request of $160,225," Chair David Ozer said during the committee's opening remarks. He urged a review order that prioritized smaller requests before the largest applications.
The committee largely followed that approach, placing modest awards and placeholders across community festivals, theater groups and cultural institutions. Members debated whether to fund events that had also applied to other city grant programs and whether ticketed events should be prioritized lower than free public offerings.
Committee members also agreed to withhold full funding from several large applicants that had not submitted required semiannual reports, reserving roughly $20,000 for redistribution or future consideration.
The panel made a formal motion listing recommended awards (totaling $98,725) and approved the motion by voice vote. The committee adjourned immediately afterward.
