Council approves $13,128 rebuild of sheriff's tractor engine

At its Sept. 3 meeting, the Blackford County Council approved a motion to rebuild the sheriff’s tractor engine for $13,128.03 and pay for the work from the county’s Rainy Day Fund. Council member Patrick Cale moved the action and Ryan Goodspeed seconded; the motion passed 7–0.
Sheriff Jim Heflin told the council the tractor is a 1998 model with about 1,628 hours of use and that replacing the motor would cost $19,366.33, while rebuilding it would cost $13,128.03. Heflin also presented additional capital estimates: quotes for a second well at $120,000 (Ortman) and $110,000 (Helvie and Sons); dormitory doors for $64,469 and windows for $117,480; shooting-range expansion for $9,000 and a new shed for $5,365; and a proposed Guardian RFID tablet system with a $10,000 upfront cost and about $7,000 yearly maintenance.
The council voted on the tractor engine proposal immediately after the sheriff’s presentation. No member of the public addressed the item during the meeting.
