HPC member urges full preservation review for Armory renovation

Barb Pitchford introduced herself as a private citizen and noted she serves on the Historic Preservation Commission; she said the Armory is an ‘‘iconic architectural structure in the Aspen core’’ and that she was ‘‘disappointed that the city of Aspen is not following its own process and historic preservation guidelines.’'
Pitchford asked why the proposed review would treat the renovation as a public project — with HPC only a recommending body late in the process — rather than following the planned-development pathway that would give HPC an early, formal review. She urged the council to prioritize preservation over expediency for a project she described as ‘‘significant.’"
