Council denies lone pay motion for sheriff deputies, approves $15,000 vehicle increase
Summary
At the Aug. 20 budget workshop, the council did not advance a $2,000 compromise motion for sheriff deputy merit pay due to lack of a second; it did approve a $15,000 increase to the Public Safety vehicle line, 6–0.
Sheriff Jim Heflin asked the council to increase merit deputy pay by $3,000 rather than the proposed $1,000. Council member Patrick Cale moved for a $2,000 increase, but that motion "died from a lack of 2nd" and therefore was not adopted.
Separately, within the LIT Public Safety budget the council approved increasing the vehicle line by $15,000. "A motion was made by Dick to increase Vehicle by $15,000 and 2nd by Goodspeed," the minutes record; the motion passed 6–0. The minutes also note that Sheriff Heflin requested the chief deputy position be classified as non-exempt; council staff will consult Waggoner, Irwin, Scheele & Associates, Inc. on that classification question.
