Yates County authorizes specialty rescue teams and buys new ambulance

The Yates County Legislature on June 8 authorized the Office of Emergency Services to establish specialty rescue teams — including a surface/flood/swift-water rescue team, hazardous materials decontamination, fire investigation and deputy fire coordinators — under New York State law, and approved the purchase of a Crestline 2027 ambulance for up to $169,650.
Legislator Bill Holgate described the proposed water-related capability as "basically flood and swift water rescue," and the resolution notes these teams would allow quicker response and increased life safety for residents and visitors. In public comment, resident Greg Lechner asked whether county officials had discussed cost; Legislator Sarah Purdy answered that most of the teams already exist in practice and that only the Swift Water Rescue designation is new, with volunteers expected to staff the teams and limited additional gear costs possible.
Procurement records included in the resolution showed at least three bids; the selected vendor, Northeastern Rescue Vehicles, offered the Crestline ambulance for $169,650, the lowest responsive bid. The Legislature approved the purchase and related authorizations by unanimous vote. The resolutions also directed relevant copies to OES leadership, finance and human resources for implementation and budgeting.
Next steps: OES will complete procurement paperwork and direct funds per the capital improvement project. Any equipment or staffing needs tied to the new team designations will be coordinated with volunteer departments and the Director of Emergency Services.
