Assigned Counsel reports 53 arraignments in January, proposes Family Court expansion

Lloyd Hoskins, representing the Assigned Counsel office, told the committee that the Centralized Arraignment Program handled 53 arraignments in January; 27 defendants (51%) were released on their own recognizance and 26 (49%) were held. He reported attorney costs for CAP in January of $10,430, which were paid from an Indigent Legal Services (ILS) grant.
Hoskins also said the office calendared attorneys for Counsel at First Appearance—61 in Auburn City Court and 23 in town/village courts—and that associated attorney costs for those appearances were $11,460 (paid from ILS). He said the office is working with NYS Indigent Legal Services on a three-year proposal to enhance Family Court representation through caseload reductions and interdisciplinary supports.
