Residents urge crosswalk safety, flood task force and support for parks bond

During public comment, Joe Beck warned the council that a new sidewalk and crosswalk at the US‑41 off‑ramp could create a blind‑spot and recommended design changes including removing a guardrail, adjusting the sidewalk alignment and installing a flashing pedestrian light. "They're pouring concrete today... they're putting a new sidewalk in to access 1st Street...I think it's gonna create a... liability issue," Beck said; the city manager asked staff to coordinate with the Florida Department of Transportation.
Advocates also urged the city to prioritize housing options before enforcing camping prohibitions and to use vacant buildings to shelter people. One speaker said the city has buildings that could be repurposed and called for cooperation to provide housing options. Jerry Miller spoke in support of the parks go‑bond and thanked permitting and public‑works staff for recent work; he urged voters to pass the bond to improve green space.
Anne Martindale urged a council task force on flood prevention for downtown and riverfront areas, citing three major hurricanes and personal flood damage. She recommended both short‑term and big‑picture strategies and asked the council to elevate flood mitigation as a regular agenda item. Council asked staff to share Mr. Beck’s crosswalk concerns with FDOT and to follow up on suggestions from public comment.
