Gary Taylor, a candidate for Jerome County sheriff, told commissioners on April 16 that he "wants to finish this term" and may run for another term afterward. Taylor emphasized continuity and staff retention, saying the office has been able to retain personnel and that he would rely on existing leadership to steady operations.
Taylor said he maintains working relationships with the Idaho Counties Risk Management Program (ICRMP) and the prosecutors office and that any policy on surveillance technology such as Flock cameras should be audited to ensure proper use. On personnel costs, commissioners raised concerns about PTO and ESL affecting the budget; Taylor said he has ideas to address the issue and would review staffing patterns and retention options rather than make immediate sweeping changes.
Commissioner Art Watkins asked whether staff would stay under his leadership; Taylor replied that the current staff would stay if he were appointed and that he counts on support from office leadership. When asked about personal conduct and any background issues, Taylor acknowledged "everyone has made mistakes and that there may be skeletons in his closet but he cant think of any," and said he leans on family support to stay balanced.
The Board did not select a candidate on April 16; commissioners said they will continue deliberations Monday and expect to swear in a new sheriff on Tuesday.
