Robert Rausch, a candidate for Jerome County sheriff, told the Board of Commissioners on April 16 that he can "yes he can fill the rest of the term" and that he intends to run for election after an appointment. The interview, part of a sequence of candidate interviews, focused on his immediate priorities, relationships with POST and plans for the first 90 days.
Rausch said he has experience training recruits and familiarity with POST through prior work at the College of Southern Idaho. He told commissioners he would sit down with deputies to get to know staff and stabilize operations. On technology, Rausch said he was aware of issues "with the use of technology, especially the flock cameras" and would seek to ensure those systems are used appropriately and within legal bounds.
During questioning from Commissioner Charles M. Howell and Chairman Ben Crouch, Rausch emphasized working cooperatively with POST and other law enforcement partners and with county leadership while maintaining the independence of the sheriffs office. He said he would provide assurances to the board and the public through an outlined 90-day plan and by meeting with staff to assess needs.
The Board will continue deliberations Monday and expects to swear in the newly appointed sheriff on Tuesday if a selection is made.
