Planning staff to pilot monthly pre-application meetings with VDOT, VDH and county departments

Planning staff announced a new monthly pre-application meeting series aimed at speeding project review and improving interagency coordination. The meetings, proposed to begin in June and be held on the fourth Tuesday of each month, will invite VDOT, the Health Department, Emergency Services, Building, Zoning, Planning and Economic Development staff to sit with applicants and review project maps and application requirements together.
Planning staff said the goal is to provide applicants with consolidated early feedback so they can submit complete application packages to the county and avoid repeated rounds of questions. "We will invite VDOT, Health Department, Emergency Services, Building staff, Zoning staff, Planning staff to meet with the applicant at the very beginning stages," staff said. The Commission discussed the role of commissioners at those meetings and staff recommended rotating or limited commissioner attendance to avoid ex parte appearances. The proposal will move forward for staff implementation.
What’s next: Staff aims to begin the monthly pre-application sessions in June and will publish schedule details and guidance on participation and scope.
