Brookings County staff: 230 people on Section 8; waiting list about 70

Rose Smith, staff member for the Brookings County Housing and Redevelopment Commission, summarized the agency's program caseload and grant balances at the commission's April 16 meeting.
"There are currently 230, people receiving assistance on the Section 8 program, this includes Mod-Rehab which has 6 units," Rose Smith said during her staff report. She told commissioners that about 70 people are on the waiting list, six clients hold vouchers and are searching for housing, and two clients are awaiting inspections before leasing up.
Smith also reported program-related disbursements and grant balances: the Family Self-Sufficiency program paid out $29,015 for a client who graduated in April, and a security-deposit grant of $25,000 was issued, with $10,065 still remaining. The report provided the commission with current caseload figures and available grant funds but did not propose immediate policy changes.
The figures were presented as part of the staff report; commissioners did not vote on program-level policy at the meeting but approved associated financial reports later in the session.
