Fort Myers CRA plans to expand downtown redevelopment area; council review set for December

Melanie Long, CRA assistant director, told the Economic Development Advisory Board the downtown plan update enlarges the downtown redevelopment boundary and bundles projects so tax increment revenue can be used where it is most needed. She said the CRA expects to present the plan to City Council for final approval on Dec. 2 and described the review steps already completed, including planning-board review and notices to taxing authorities.
"The downtown plan update is the expansion of the downtown area," Long said as she walked members through maps showing the added parcels and redevelopment sectors. Long summarized the CRA's 10‑year revenue allocation exercise, showing draft assignments for mobility, resiliency, mixed‑use redevelopment and home preservation; she said the agency will pursue grants and coordinate with DOT and county partners to fund projects that exceed CRA resources. The board asked for clearer project design tear sheets and cost estimates ahead of the council presentation; staff said those tear sheets will accompany the final package.
