The Cudahy Board of Health voted unanimously on Jan. 15, 2025 to direct the Cudahy Health Department to seek reaccreditation from the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB). The motion was made by Dr. David Sherman and seconded by Jessica Gathirimu; board members voted "all in favor."
Health Officer Heather Puente and Public Health Manager Teresa Ortiz presented the rationale for reaccreditation, noting that the department earned PHAB accreditation in March 2020 and that its current accreditation expires March 31, 2025. Presenters said PHAB fees are reviewed annually and that PHAB has indicated fees would not increase by more than 5% in any given year; they also reported a "high chance" that the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) would cover the 2025 fee with Public Health Infrastructure funds.
Board members and staff discussed benefits cited by PHAB accreditation, including promoting public trust, demonstrating commitment to quality and performance improvement, incorporating an equity lens, and simplifying DHS 140 review processes. Presenters also flagged operational challenges, including the staff time required to complete reaccreditation materials and the sustainability of annual fees.
