Soil & Water reports heavy demand for streambank work, FEMA permitting and new watershed coalition

Steuben County Soil & Water reported $198,000 in streambank stabilization estimates against a $75,000 annual county allocation, over 80 FEMA permits in progress, new intern support and participation in an Eastern Finger Lakes Watershed Coalition to accelerate watershed and pest‑management work.
Jeff Parker, District Manager for the Steuben County Soil & Water Conservation District, provided a detailed activities update, saying the County‑funded Streambank Stabilization Program (budgeted $75,000 annually) currently has more than $198,000 of project estimates and that the district is pursuing additional grant opportunities to cover remaining work.
Parker said the district currently employs eight people, has secured an Upper Susquehanna Coalition‑funded summer intern to assist with riparian buffer planting and maintenance, and is helping municipalities with FEMA permitting (he reported more than 80 permits). He also announced the new Eastern Finger Lakes Watershed Coalition formed to coordinate pest management, agricultural projects and streambank and municipal work. Parker thanked the County Legislature for support during his 37 years with the district.
