Local nonprofits seek steady or increased FY27 support—CASA, CCHS, BBBS, Humane Society and others

Several local nonprofits and service providers presented FY27 funding requests and updates during the April 23 work session. MaKayla Shields, Director of CASA, requested $5,000 for FY27, the same appropriation as FY26. Julie Mignone of the Cowley County Historical Society requested $8,500 for FY27, an increase from $8,000. Debi Clark of Big Brothers/Big Sisters asked for $10,000 (up from $7,500) and cited higher background check fees as a driver. Amy Gates of the Cowley County Humane Society requested $8,000 (up from $5,000) and noted the organization is now operating as a no-kill shelter and has added a wine-tasting fundraiser.
Other service providers presented as well: Christina Pingry of the Council on Aging requested $151,000 (same as FY26) and described partnerships to support older residents, and Steve Denny of Four County Mental Health requested $195,459 (up from $170,000) and asked for Special Alcohol Funds in addition to the requested appropriation. Commissioners heard the presentations and will incorporate the requests into the formal FY27 budget process.
