County limits septic inspections to LEPG or county sanitarian; motion passes 3-0

The commission approved a motion requiring that septic and sanitary inspections in Ottawa County be performed only by the Local Environmental Planning Group (LEPG) or the county sanitarian after a contractor inspection was questioned; County Sanitarian Phillip Murrow said the county is in compliance with KDHE rules.
Phillip Murrow, Ottawa County Sanitarian, told the commission a contractor-conducted septic inspection had been questioned and recommended that the county require inspections be conducted only by the Local Environmental Planning Group (LEPG) or by the county sanitarian. "I checked the LEPG code and called the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and stated we are in compliance with the state," Murrow said.
Commissioner Carla Grund moved and Commissioner Duane Morris seconded a motion "to approve that all sanitarian inspections will be by the LEPG or the county sanitarian." The motion passed unanimously, 3-0. Tammi Cox, County Clerk, offered to provide Murrow with a copy of the Ottawa County sanitary code for local reference. Murrow also noted KDHE is working to update the sanitary code at the state level.
