Resident alerts commissioners to road damage from heavy trucks; Board to rework road-use agreement

A local taxpayer told the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners on Dec. 16 that heavy trucks traveling near SE 30th Street and Swalley Avenue have caused substantial roadway damage, prompting calls for action and closer review of the county’s road-use agreement.
Roger Draeger told the Board the road is “broken down” from repeated heavy-truck traffic. Road & Bridge Supervisor Cody Zook said he would speak with Jason Smith at Environmental Quality Management because the trucks are part of that project. Commissioners noted the existing road-use agreement is not finalized and contains wording that could prevent some residents from using their driveways; they directed staff to schedule a work session for Dec. 30 to complete the agreement.
Commissioner Lorie Johnson emphasized that current draft language might be too restrictive for taxpayers seeking to perform work and urged substantial revisions. Cody Zook said he will also look for examples of local business exemptions to inform the agreement update.
