Labette County zoning official outlines process and potential model for Cherokee County

Mel Haas, Labette County zoning administrator, briefed the Cherokee County Board on county zoning and its relevance to renewable-energy projects. Haas said that “54 out of the 105 counties in Kansas were zoned,” and argued that zoning has made it possible to regulate projects that otherwise could proceed without local land-use controls.
Haas described practical steps and boards that a zoning county would need to appoint, and he suggested looking at Barton County and Labette County as models. Commissioners listened and asked procedural questions; the Board did not take action on zoning during this meeting.
