Montgomery County reports 571 people in 2026 Point-in-Time count; unsheltered homelessness flagged as concern

Human Services Planning and Development (HSPD) staff presented the county's 2026 homelessness overview to the Board of County Commissioners on June 9, reporting a 2026 Point-in-Time single-night count of 571 individuals. "The 2026 Point-in-Time count identified 571 individuals (488 sheltered and 83 unsheltered)," HSPD staff said, and staff noted that the unsheltered population remains a concern despite an overall decline from 2023 levels.
The presentation said most households experiencing homelessness are single adults, and HSPD staff highlighted changes in system performance: nearly half of clients exit the system within seven days while the average length of homelessness rose to 78 days in recent reporting. Veteran homelessness was reported to have declined to 32 identified veterans in 2026. HSPD staff emphasized that making homelessness "rare, brief, and one-time" remains the county's stated objective and described the Continuum of Care components in use locally.
