Connie Terry of the Steuben Prevention Coalition said Upstate Medical testing showed approximately 90% of fentanyl samples contained xylazine, and cautioned that a single dose of naloxone (Narcan) may not be enough to reverse overdoses involving that adulterant. Terry said the Opioid Committee has trained 273 community members in naloxone administration to date.
Terry listed upcoming awareness and disposal efforts: National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is April 25 and National Fentanyl Awareness Day is April 29. She reported 69 overdoses to date this year with "6 or 7" fatalities and 19 naloxone admissions, and noted a nationwide decrease (23%–43%) she attributed in part to harm-reduction measures and opioid settlement funding.
