Committee approves Saxon Harbor fishing tournament; dredging and shoreline armor plans outlined

The Iron County committee approved a request from the Saxon Harbor Boating Club to hold its annual fishing tournament at Saxon Harbor June 5–7, 2026 (motion by J. Pinardi, second by P. Hanson). The committee recorded the motion as carried unanimously.
Administrator Eric Peterson reported that the Saxon Harbor docks were installed May 12, leaving five open slips for the 2026 season and another 4–5 sailboat slips limited by shallow channel depth. He said the U.S. Army Corps listed Saxon Harbor dredging as a project to be awarded in late 2026 and completed in spring 2027, and that Iron County dredging planned for 2026 is likely to be pushed to 2027 because of the USACE schedule. Peterson told the committee $375,000 was secured through Senator Baldwin via Direct Congressional Spending for armoring the Lake Superior shoreline along Harbor Drive and building a beach-access stairway; an additional $42,000 Wisconsin Coastal Management grant is in hand for project design.
