Commission OKs raising speed limit to 45 mph on 48th Street (Resolution 2026-10)
Summary
After a pavement project and a traffic study by BG Consultants using KDOT and MUTCD guidance, Ellis County adopted Resolution 2026-10 on May 12 to raise the speed limit on 48th Street from 35 mph to 45 mph; the motion passed 3–0.
Public Works Director Brendan Mackay recommended increasing the posted speed limit on 48th Street from 35 mph to 45 mph following joint pavement repairs with the City of Hays and a traffic study by BG Consultants. Mackay told commissioners the corridor has excellent sight distance, lies near the fringe of urban development and has a relatively high number of quality driveways; the recommendation used KDOT’s Access Management Policy and 85th‑percentile speed guidelines from the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and AASHTO.
Commissioner Nathan Leiker moved to adopt Resolution 2026-10 to set the new 45 mph limit; Commissioner Michael Berges seconded and the motion passed by voice vote of three to zero. The resolution will be recorded in county records per standard procedure. No immediate changes to enforcement or signage scheduling were specified in the minutes.
