Ellis County honors firefighters and EMS crew for saving colleague’s life

Ellis County Commissioners and local emergency services recognized multiple fire and EMS personnel May 12 after a firefighter suffered a medical emergency at the station and was later discharged from the hospital. County leaders praised volunteers and ongoing training.
Chair Neal Younger opened the meeting at 8:30 a.m. and the board paused the agenda to recognize lifesaving actions by Fire and EMS personnel.
Fire Chief Darin Myers and EMS Director Danita Schroeder presented awards after Firefighter Matt VanDyke experienced a medical emergency at the station. The Ellis County Fire Department named Captain James Younger, Firefighter Mason Emerson and Firefighter Tanner Herskowitz to receive the Lifesaving Commendation for actions that “went above and beyond” and contributed to saving VanDyke’s life. Ellis County EMS presented Danita Schroeder, Captain Elea Cook, Paramedic Kelly Depiesse and EMT Dawson VonFeldt with the EMS Field Save Award; the packet notes that the average survival rate for out‑of‑hospital cardiac arrest is about 10%.
Commissioners thanked the volunteers for their response and for ongoing training that helps keep the community safe. The recognition was recorded by the clerk and entered into the meeting minutes.
