Cherokee County OKs up to $112,500 in ARPA funds to repaint Rainbow Bridge

Machelle Smith and Aaron Perry of the Kansas Route 66 Association asked the Board to apply for an 80/20 matching grant from the Kansas Historical Society to cover a $100,000 stripping-and-repainting project for the Rainbow Bridge. Smith said the paint is durable and that she was told the product "would last a lifetime," and the association said graffiti would be easier to wash off with the proposed finish.
Commissioner Myra Frazier moved to spend up to $112,500 in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to complete the project; Commissioner Lorie Johnson seconded and the motion passed unanimously. The Board later amended the earlier motion to explicitly designate expenditures up to $112,500 for maintenance of the bridge. The grant, if awarded, would reimburse 80 percent of eligible costs under the Kansas Historical Society program.
