County ethics official briefs Lantana council on training, gift reporting and advisory services

Liz Martin, representing the Palm Beach County Commission on Ethics, told the council the body focuses on education, enforcement and investigation with the primary emphasis on prevention and training.
"Our goal is education, enforcement and investigation, but ultimately education," Martin said, and she noted the commission provides advisory opinions, gift-reporting forms, and training across the county. She said a new 2025 pocket guide for council and staff is available and that the commission enforces the county's ethics ordinance, which applies to municipal employees and lobbyists.
Martin described the commission as independent and outlined disciplinary options ranging from letters of instruction to fines (up to $500) while stressing that prevention is preferred. Council accepted the presentation and copies of the pocket guide were left with the deputy clerk for distribution to officials and staff.
